“AI has been helpful during the Covid19 crisis. Yet, there is a risk that we unconsciously get trapped in these surveillance systems. That is why we need to have a discussion about transparency, explainability and responsibility,” says our co-founderAnna Felländer in a newly released book by Christian von Essen entitled “What is Happening with the Future Now? – 20 Visionaries about Sweden after Corona.”
Christian also has a podcast Heja Framtiden, where he invites specialists to talk on different topics – future, tech and entrepreneurship. The book is about what kind of Sweden we would like to build if we get the chance for a re-start. In some ways the pandemic has helped us make huge progress – with remote work, digital education, lower climate impact and discussions about guaranteed basic income. MetricStream’s Global Risk and Compliance Summit May 2020
The AI Sustainability Center and Metricstream co-hosted a Panel on the topic of “Assessing and Mitigating AI Risk – using the right tools” at MetricStream’s Global Governance and Compliance Summit 18-20 May, 2020. We were joined on the panel by three companies Telia, Job Agent and OPAP. They shared their practical experiences, learnings and insights that they were able to gain from the tool, and how such a tool can be deployed in corporate risk frameworks.
Nordic Innovation Summit
Founder Elaine Grunewald and the CEO of Scania, Henrik Henriksson gave an opening keynote at the Nordic Innovation Summit 2020 virtual event on May 14, 2020. They then went on to co-host a panel on Corporate Reinvention through Sustainability Leadership together with with Eva Karlsson from Houdini, Kimberly Lein-Mathisen from Microsoft Norway and Osvald Bjelland from Xynteo.
2000 listeners gathered online on May 14th to listen to top Nordic and Pacific Northwest leaders talk about sustainability, growth, and corporate leadership. The Nordic Innovation Summit is organized each year by the Nordic Museum in Seattle but was virtual this year due to COVID-19. Watch the panel here:
Paper published in Nature Communications on the role of artificial intelligence in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
Founder Anna Felländer has jointly published a paper on the role of artificial intelligence in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), together with Max Tegmark, Ricardo Vinuesa and other prominent researchers within the field. The authors conclude that AI can enable the accomplishment of 134 targets across all SDGs, but it may also inhibit 59 targets.

New report out now! The socio-legal relevance of artificial intelligence by one of the Center’s research advisors Stefan Larsson is now published. The report draws on socio-legal theory in relation to growing concerns over fairness, accountability and transparency of societally applied AI and machine learning. Read the report here.
