The AI Sustainability Center and MetricStream are jointly offering an automated tool for risk scanning of data and AI solutions. We are combining the MetricStream cloud-based governance, risk management, and compliance platform and AISC’s framework for Sustainable AI, thus allowing organizations to effectively gain insights into their use of AI and data-driven solutions and where risks might occur.
What is Sustainable AI?
The transformative benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) are undisputed. However, they cannot be fully realized until the risks of AI are also brought into the equation and are appropriately addressed. That’s where “Sustainable AI” comes in. The AISC has characterized Sustainable AI as the the identification, measurement, and governance of AI in order to avoid causing or eventually mitigating the possible negative impacts of data-driven technologies. This includes an assessment of how AI is scaling in broader societal and ethical contexts. With a Sustainable AI strategy, negative externalities, such as privacy intrusion, discrimination, and bias can be identified and mitigated in an organization’s business models.
“Industry professionals, researchers, policymakers, regulators, and individuals need to be aware of the ethical and social implications of Al. Risks such as privacy intrusion, discrimination, and bias can result in negative consequences if Al is not governed in a sustainable way. It’s time to get visibility to these risks in the normal risk frameworks and business models. We are excited to partner with MetricStream to bring this transition forward.”
The AI Risk Scanning Profile provides an assessment of the current state of AI use cases, enabling the early identification of risks, as well as a baseline to raise an organization’s self-awareness of where risks could occur which, in turn, is fundamental in building better governance and controls around unintended pitfalls.
By participating in the AI Sustainability Center Risk Scanning you:
Gain a competitive edge by learning to use AI and data-driven technologies in a sustainable way, acting ahead of the regulatory curve.
Proactively leverage the risk scanning profile as a health check for AI applications.
Ensure that your organization’s AI fundamentals are in place: transparency, explainability, accountability, and governance.
AI is becoming an ubiquitous technology where new risks threaten consumer trust caused by the lack of governance and transparency. MetricStream’s M7 GRC platform will enable AISC to scale its innovative, proactive approach in helping organizations build a strong foundation of good governance, risk visibility, and compliance powered by ethical AI.”
Costly consequences if the use of data-driven technology is not governed
Data-driven technologies pose risks that are difficult to predict with traditional assessment tools. These risks stem from pitfalls such as misuse, immature AI, and bias.
The “AI Sustainability Lens” (including the technical, legal and societal perspectives) and the “AI Sustainable Fundamentals” (transparency, explainability, accountability and governance) build the foundation of a methodology to identify, measure and govern the unintended negative ethical pitfalls. Ungoverned, the use of data-driven technologies and AI may expose organizations to costly risks and severe trust breaches.
In Telia Company’s Division X we are developing innovative data centric products for cities, enterprises and consumers that will increasingly apply AI. As a leading telecom operator in the Nordics and Baltics, it is critical that we retain the high level of trust our customers have in us, so we wanted to get it right from the start with comprehensive risk scanning, facilitated by the AI Sustainability Center. Having access to this specialized AI risk tool via a global platform would allow us to be more efficient with future assessments and support the implementation of our Guiding Principles for Trusted AI across our operations.
The AI Sustainability Center Framework
The AI Sustainability Center’s Framework is applied to AI and other data-driven solutions with the purpose of detecting unintended ethical pitfalls surrounding AI, and thereby preventing risks before they occur. The AI Sustainability Lens, which looks at AI governance from a technical, legal, and societal perspective, is used throughout the framework.
Detecting vulnerabilities – risk scanning and profiling
The first phase of the AI Sustainability framework is risk scanning which results in an AI sustainable risk profile. The risk scanning assesses the current state with regards to a selected use-case, providing early identification of risk areas and scenarios for organizations developing and implementing data-driven technologies and AI.
The risk profile is based on a self-assessment designed to provide an indication of where risks could occur, which is key to creating mitigation strategies. The risk profile also provides a baseline for raising self awareness of risks in an organization, which is fundamental to building governance and control for unintended pitfalls.
The AI Sustainability Center intends to focus on mitigating risks as well as facilitating the realization of the vast gains to organizations, society and individuals by acting proactively. It will provide an opportunity for members not only to avoid future pitfalls, but also to gain a competitive edge by learning to use Al in a sustainable way. The MetricStream platform will allow us to reach a wide range of organizations, providing scalable process that organizations can use to understand the scope of their AI risks and build plans to align them through transparency and good governance.
About the AI Sustainability Center
The AI Sustainability Center is a multidisciplinary center for responsible and purpose-driven technology. It brings together actors from business the public sector, civil society and non-governmental organizations, as well as experts from various academic fields, in a collaborative initiative for piloting and implementing AI sustainability strategies and frameworks. The center focuses on how organizations can identify, measure and govern the ethical implications of AI and data driven technologies, and assesses how they are scaling in broader societal contexts. Our goal is to ensure a broader and deeper exchange on how the digitalization of society affects us all. AISC has developed the AI Sustainability Framework to assess risks and outcomes, and enable this conversation to take place in a multistakeholder environment.
